We match you with projects based on your knowledge and skills, and you decide which projects you want to work on. Before starting a project, you'll see clear information about the nature of the work and the current pay rates. You're free to say yes or no to opportunities that come your way.
How projects work
Projects become available on Outlier when one of our customers needs a specific type of data. When that customer has received all the data they need, the project ends. In other words, the kind of work you can find on Outlier at any given time depends entirely on the needs of our customers. This means that there will be periods of time when there is no work available for you. However, things move fast in our industry and these stretches usually don’t last too long.
More skills, more opportunities
The more skills you can demonstrate, the more projects you can access on Outlier. The pay rates for various forms of expertise may differ based on market conditions. For example, if you can do advanced mathematics and speak fluent Spanish, you might see different rates for tasks requiring each skill.
Understanding pay rates
Pay rates on Outlier are set at the task level — they are not tied to your account or to specific projects. This means that the rates you're offered may vary between tasks and over time, even within the same project. When you're offered a new task, you'll see its current rate and can decide whether to accept it. This flexibility helps us match expert availability with customer needs in our marketplace.
Weekly payments, clearly tracked
Your dashboard shows detailed earnings information, so you can see exactly what you earned for each task, including the time spent and rate applied. We process payments every Tuesday, and depending on your chosen payment method, your earnings will take between a few minutes to a few days to arrive in your account.
