So, what do Outlier Experts actually do?

Curious about what Outlier Experts do on a day-to-day basis? We’ll cover all your questions in this post.
First, you may be wondering: “What is Outlier?”
Outlier is an AI training platform owned and operated by Scale AI. We improve the quality, accuracy, & helpfulness of AI Language Learning Models (LLMs). To do so, we have a worldwide team of experts that train AI from home.
There are 40+ domains where AI needs help (e.g. STEM, coding, spoken languages, audio projects, writing, and more) and we recruit experts based on their unique skill set.
Who are Outlier Experts?
Our experts come from all around the world! They can be students, 9-to-5 workers, parents, and anything in between.
They’re usually skilled in a specific domain and work on tasks according to that domain (ex. a mathematics expert will have tasks related to algebra, calculus, and so on). We have “generalist” experts too, who are skilled in writing and content editing.

What is the work schedule like for an Outlier Expert?
One of the best perks of working on Outlier is that experts can set their own hours and work as much or as little as they like — all from the comfort of home. Some experts choose to work 5 hours a week, and some work 40 hours. The time commitment is up to you.
Okay, so what do Outlier Experts do?
In broad terms, Outlier Experts create and answer questions to train AI, review AI outputs for accuracy, and provide feedback on generated responses. They do this via different projects.
On an expert’s dashboard, they can have multiple projects available at once—each varying in goal, availability, and complexity. Project specifications can differ depending on the domain, but we’ll share an example tailored for STEM experts.
For this STEM project, there are 4 main steps to follow.
Please note: these are only snippets of project specifications and should be used as examples only.

Although this was one just example, we hope this gives you a clearer idea of what a project can look like for an Outlier Expert.
What types of support are offered to Outlier Experts?
To set our Outlier Experts up for success, we provide them with onboarding, helpful training materials, and various ways where they can ask questions or submit feedback. Here’s a breakdown of the different support channels we offer.
Webinars
Experts can join webinars hosted by a Queue Manager (QM), where they dive into helpful topics such as onboarding tips, project updates, examples of strong vs. weak prompts, and ways to improve prompt quality.
Each session has a quick slide presentation and usually wraps up with time for Q&A, which is a great chance to ask any specific questions and get advice.
Outlier Community Platform
All experts have access to an active Outlier Community platform, where they can get updates, project documents, and answers to any concerns directly from QMs.

Here’s an example of a general announcement
Office Hours
If experts have a quick question, they can drop into office hours and get their answer. We also provide access to “War Rooms”, where experts can ask questions while in the middle of a specific task. They usually receive immediate feedback so they can continue on their project right away.
Training Courses
When a new project is launched, experts will take an intro course to learn the basics and see key examples of how to complete the task successfully. At the end, there will be a short quiz to check their understanding and determine eligibility to join the project.
As projects evolve, we roll out more courses to address common mistakes, share updated guidance, or provide helpful refreshers so everyone is on track.
