How Outlier helps Amit S. keep his problem-solving skills sharp

While undergrad Amit S. came to Outlier with the goal of finding part-time work training LLMs, he quickly realized his assigned projects were rekindling an old passion.

“Growing up, I spent a lot of time participating in math competitions,” he says. “It's been pretty cool to revisit that kind of problem-solving via Outlier. Out of all the things I’ve worked on, the math projects have been my favorite.”

Amit studies mathematics and computer science at Georgia Tech. Last winter, he was determined to get involved with LLMs — specifically, training them for high school tasks related to subjects like programming and mathematics. He found Outlier and applied on a whim.

“The platform seemed like a great fit, especially considering the flexibility involved with working here,” he remembers. “I began onboarding and ended up really liking the format of it. I soon got really involved with Outlier.”

Flexibility is a huge perk for Amit. His previous part-time work required a fixed schedule that was stressful to juggle along with his demanding schoolwork and class schedule. 

“Outlier’s been a really big game-changer for managing my schedule,” he says. “Plus, the work is low pressure and interesting. You don’t feel burned out at all.”

If Amit does find himself stuck on a particularly challenging task, he can rely on his Outlier peers. 

“It’s a really solid community of people who enjoy writing and tackling interesting math problems,” he says. “I get to work with a lot of very interesting people who are into the same topics I am.”

Amit finds his Outlier experience rewarding on both a personal and professional level, and has already sung its praises to friends who share his interest in math and AI: “For anyone looking for an opportunity to work on meaningful tasks advancing AI safety and intelligence, with the added benefit of a self-paced schedule, I would say that Outlier is definitely worth a try.”
