What Does a Recruiter Do at Outlier AI?

As Outlier AI’s Expert Recruiter, Jean spends most of his time identifying professionals who are a great fit for freelance AI jobs on the platform.

“I try to recruit as many people as possible to work with AI,” Jean explains. “I spend a lot of time on LinkedIn, reaching out to people whose profiles show signs of the subject-matter expertise we need for teaching AI—whether it's in math, science, coding, or even languages.”

His role is often the first point of contact for new contributors exploring AI training platforms, and he plays a key part in helping Outlier grow its expert community.

Finding the Right Experts to Work With AI

So what qualities are Jean looking for?

“To put it simply, we need people who have specialized knowledge,” he says. “Our experts create data that customers use to train their generative AI models. To oversimplify it: people working on Outlier are basically teaching AI what they know.”

This means Jean is on the lookout for professionals who can translate their subject-matter expertise into high-quality training data. That might include coders, scientists, linguists, or even accountants.

Teaching AI: What Makes a Great Contributor?

“The short answer is: all kinds!” Jean says with a smile. “But more specifically, our needs shift depending on what our customers are building.”

At the moment, Outlier regularly hires experts in:

These roles are part of a growing ecosystem of freelance AI jobs on the platform, many of which allow people to work with AI from home on flexible schedules.

“Honestly? The demand from our customers is kind of wild,” Jean admits. “We can barely keep up. That’s why we’re always looking for more people who can help by creating high-quality training data.”

This growth reflects the broader boom in AI training platforms and the increasing need for human input to fine-tune large language models.

How to Succeed on an AI Training Platform

Success on Outlier doesn’t require a technical background, but it does require real knowledge.

“First and foremost, you actually have to know what you say you know,” Jean explains. “It’s self-reported, so if you claim to know chemistry but don’t, you won’t get very far.”

In addition to subject expertise, successful experts typically have:

  • A few hours of availability each week

  • A stable internet connection

  • A computer and a quiet workspace

  • Strong critical thinking skills

That’s all you need to get started with remote AI work, no prior experience with AI or coding required.

How to Start Remote AI Work On Outlier

So, what’s next if you want to apply to a remote open position?

“There are a few simple steps to join,” Jean says:

  1. Create an account

  2. Verify your identity (this is a legal requirement)

  3. Set up your payment method

  4. Pass an assessment or two to confirm your subject knowledge

From there, you can start working with AI on real projects that fit your schedule.
