What our contributors see while they’re on Outlier

We asked Outlier contributors a simple question: what do you see when you look up from your screen?

We expected desks, maybe some coffee shops. We got alligators, a mother's chair in Indonesia, shoes hanging from trees in Rotterdam, a mystery animal that showed up to listen to Bill Evans, and a Cairo street that's "a little chaotic, a little tired… but alive in a way that's hard to explain."

Here are the views contributors shared, in their own words.

Charlotte V., Florida

"This photo was taken from my lanai while I contribute. It's not every day you have an alligator as part of your view. One of the unique perks of contributing from Florida."

Gregorio N., Indonesia

"I occupy [my mother's chair] and do Outlier tasks where she used to sit. Between memories and the future, I have it in the chair she used to sit in. This is the view my mother used to see every day."

Rania C., Martil, Morocco

"I'm between the Mediterranean Sea and the Rif Mountains."

Karina G., Argentina

"I work in a pediatric psychopedagogy office. I take advantage of the time between patients to play with Playground. It's my great hobby."

Craig P., Rotterdam

"Shoes in trees outside my window on Witte de Withstraat, Rotterdam."

Tira R., Sabah, Malaysia (North Borneo)

"Outside my window: tropical trees, soft Sabah daylight, and a quiet neighborhood. A calm setting while working on tasks that help refine AI models."

Yu-Xin Z. (Kiwi)

"I heard the sound of claws scratching my window bars. I thought it must be our common feathery friend, but a quieter one. It enjoyed a few pieces by Bill Evans before continuing its spring afternoon walk."

Nicole H., Seattle, WA

"I'm lucky to have a beautiful view of Seattle from the top of Queen Anne Hill. Plus my kitty."

Andréa R., Brazil

"Today, from my window, I could see the gray clouds and feel the warmth. The pastel colors of the buildings and the cars standing out on the edges of the sidewalks. The trees moving slowly due to the lack of wind. Life in motion in this frenetic ecosystem."

These contributors described what they saw. We included them because we loved the picture they painted with their words.

Khaled H., Cairo, Egypt

"From my window, Cairo never really sleeps. Cars weave through the streets like they're chasing something they'll never quite catch. A soft layer of dust hangs in the air, glowing under the streetlights. Somewhere nearby, voices drift up — half conversations, half stories. It's a little chaotic, a little tired… but alive in a way that's hard to explain."

John L., Nairobi, Kenya

"A lively mix of mid-rise apartment buildings painted in warm earth tones, tall green trees swaying in the breeze, and the constant buzz of colourful matatus — our famous public minibuses — weaving through traffic below. In the distance, the city skyline stretches out under a bright blue sky, sometimes dotted with a few fluffy clouds or the faint outline of the Ngong Hills. It's a dynamic, energetic view that reminds me every day how alive and full of opportunity this city is — especially for someone like me chasing better electrician opportunities abroad while doing tasks on Outlier."

Olumuyiwa J.

"Outside my window, it's just a calm street getting warmer as the afternoon sun shines on it. A few people walk by, not in any rush. You can hear cars far away and bits of conversation in the air. Nothing special is happening, but it feels peaceful and steady. It's that in-between time of day — not fully daytime, not evening yet. The light is softer, shadows are getting longer, and everything seems to slow down a bit. It's not perfect or picture-worthy, but it's real, and it belongs to me."

Jennifer C.

"When I look up and out I see defeats but I also see the beautiful skies and the many blessings I'm blessed with, starting with waking up every morning."
